Wiki defines Keywords

Wiki defines Keywords as an index term or descriptor in Information Retrieval is a term that captures the essence of the topic of a document.

It is used as keyword to retrieve documents in an information system, for instance a catalog or a search engine. A popular form of keywords on the web are tags which are directly visible and can be assigned by non-experts also. Index terms can consist of a word, phrase, or alphanumerical term.

They are created by analyzing the document either manually with subject indexing or automatically with automatic indexing or more sophisticated methods of keyword extraction. Index terms can either come from a controlled vocabulary or be freely assigned.

Keywords are stored in a search index. Common words like articles (a, an, the) and conjunctions (and, or, but) are not treated as keywords because it is inefficient to do so.

Almost every English-language site on the Internet has the article “the”, and so it makes no sense to search for it. The most popular search engine, Google removed this stop words such as “the” and “a” from its indexes for several years, but then re-introduced them, making certain types of precise search possible again.

An example of a keyword phrase is International Internet Marketing where the website http://cindyking,biz has an association made between it (the site) and the words International Internet Marketing.

The objectives of using keywords is to have potential clients find your site. There are some keywords that are used excessively, ‘weight loss’ for example. A person entering into this market would do better to have a longer keyword phrase that defines their product or service better, or give it a location. ‘Weight loss in Chicago’ or ‘Kosher weight loss plan’.

The longer the keyword phrase, the less likely someone is to type it. The shorter the keyword phrase ‘computer’ the more difficult it will be for someone to find your site.

Typing ‘computer’ in Google gives 1.25 BILLION results, starting with wikipedia (as often is the case in a single word search) followed by Dell and similar companies.

Typing ‘Kosher weight loss plan’ in Google there are only 43 thousand results and this would be a keyword phrase you could easily place first in Google.
